June Construction Update

Update as of June 1

During May, the work on mechanical systems – particularly plumbing – began. The roof was demolished and the roof replacement work is well underway. Testing has been ongoing for soil compaction (needed to be sure that the pools are stable and won’t shift after being built and filled). In addition, the welds on the original steel beams are being tested to be sure that they still have integrity and won’t require remediation.

We asked the DPWES team to assess the capacity of the project funds to support locker room improvements we’d like to schedule during the construction period. Our intent is to replace the floors and shower partitions as well as the actual lockers. They believe there will be sufficient funding availability from the contingencies to support proceeding with these efforts. RCC staff will begin actively soliciting proposals and work with county-established contractors to be able to expedite the work.

The project team includes Branch Build project manager Bill Ruschaupt. For RRMM Lukmire Architects: Brandon Hughes; for Fairfax County Department of Public Works and Environmental Services (DPWES): Martha Sansaver, Karen Davis and Geoff Kimmel; for RCC: Executive Director Leila Gordon and Deputy Director John Blevins.

Questions about the project should be directed to RCC via: RCCContact@fairfaxcounty.gov
