July Construction Update

Update as of July 1

During June, the roof work continued. In addition, the two new pools began to take shape. While these two highly visible activities occurred, work on plumbing and modifications to designed mechanical systems also took place.

RCC received a couple of inquiries about the final depth of the warm water pool’s deepest area. Provided here are both the specifications as well as a description of how the occupancy footprint was calculated by the pool specialist Counsilman Hundsaker:

The deep part of the therapy pool (water depth of 5’ to 6’ deep) is 750 square feet and that is the area designed for up to 15 people for aqua aerobics and other exercise. Often the value of 35 square feet per person is used for aqua aerobics; we have allowed 50 square feet per person due to the shape of the pool. Almost any programmed activity in the deep end of the pool should be able to hold 15 people. On the shallow side of the pool (water depth of 3’-6” to 5’ deep) there is about 900 square feet of usable area for aquatic programming. Once again the overall area is not a rectangle, but a class of 20 people should fit comfortably into the shallow area of the pool.

As RCC looks ahead to the summer months, we will be developing our schedule for the re-opening of the pools. The next few months will be crucial to the project. We continue to aim for completion of the project in October with a likely re-opening in early November. As the progress on the project unfolds, we will focus on meeting the re-opening milestones to assure that all the project layers come together as efficiently as possible. In addition, we are going to be seeking lifeguards and instructors. If you know someone who may be interested in a great job, excellent pay, special RCC benefits and a fantastic team, please refer them to Matt McCall, RCC Aquatics Director, at 703-390-6151 or matthew.mccall@fairfaxcounty.gov.

The project team includes Branch Build project manager Bill Ruschaupt. For RRMM Lukmire Architects: Brandon Hughes; for Fairfax County Department of Public Works and Environmental Services (DPWES): Martha Sansaver, Karen Davis and Geoff Kimmel; for RCC: Executive Director Leila Gordon and Deputy Director John Blevins.
