RESTON, VA — Reston Community Center will welcome actor and environmental activist Ed Begley Jr. to the CenterStage as part of a special evening of events to raise awareness about environmental sustainability.

Ed Begley Jr.As part of RCC’s Professional Touring Artists Series, Begley will bring his program Living Simply So Others Might Simply Live to the CenterStage on Wednesday, May 4 at 8:00 p.m. Tickets are $15 (Reston)/$20 (Non-Reston) and are available at the RCC Box Office or online.

Begley says that as environmental issues become more pressing, there are two possible responses: forget them and hope that government and corporations will figure it out, or his approach – to take action and make a difference. He will share his insights about environmental sustainability in this thought-provoking and inspiring program.

All ticketholders will be given a packet of wildflower seeds, and copies of Begley’s book Guide to Sustainable Living will be available for sale at RCC. Begley will sign books after the program.

Begley (Best in Show, St. Elsewhere, A Mighty Wind are among his acting credits) is a six-time Emmy Award nominee who in recent years has shared his passion for sustainable living in a reality TV show (Living with Ed), a podcast and books.

“We are delighted to host Mr. Begley in Reston,” said RCC Board of Governors Chair Beverly Cosham. “He exemplifies the activist spirit that is so much a part of Reston’s community DNA. We are sure he will find a receptive audience for his ideas.”

At 5:00 p.m. on May 4, Begley will join RCC and Reston Association, as well as local officials, for the dedication of a new pollinator garden adjacent to Hunters Woods Village Center. The free garden event is presented in partnership with Reston Association.

Since 2019, Reston Association has participated in the National Wildlife Federation’s Mayor’s Monarch Pledge. This program helps educate communities on monarch conservation efforts and provide resources for people to create butterfly habitats on their own properties and in their neighborhoods. The planting of this new pollinator garden will help Reston achieve recertification for 2022.

“Spring is a great time for people to act by adding native plants to their yards and parklands. The new plants in this garden will provide food for caterpillars and nectar for adult butterflies, bees and hummingbirds. Pollinators play such an important role in ecology and agriculture. It’s wonderful to see our community coming together to do something beneficial for them,” said Katie Shaw, manager of RA’s Walker Nature Center.
