Pay rate: $12.00 – $19.00 per hour
Counselors are responsible for campers in the 5 – 17 age range in two to six person teams for travel and specialty camps. The Camp Counselor is a thoughtful team player and will be supervised by the Youth and Teen Program Director and Assistants.
Program Responsibilities
- Closely supervises campers during camp activities, field trips, between activity periods, and at lunch on a rotating basis.
- Communicates with other counselors daily regarding campers, program responsibilities, activities and schedules.
- Shows flexibility when camp plans may change due to inclement weather or other unexpected issues.
- Camp Counselor must be willing to lead and engage in daily activities with camp participants.
Camper Welfare
- Assures safety and welfare of campers during camp hours.
- Actively works with campers to develop their positive self-image, tolerance of others’ differences and enthusiasm for camp.
- Assists Youth and Teen Director and Assistants in determining strategies for helping individual campers with behavioral or other issues.
- Promotes positive relationships between the camp and parents.
Support Responsibilities
- Assists in protecting RCC property and/or property at a venue utilized by the camp.
- Assists in maintaining camp behavior management program.
- Assists pool staff in maintaining safety during swim time, and swimming alongside campers during all swimming session.
Desired Qualifications
- Must be at least 16 years old to work as a counselor.
- High school diploma and/or related experience working with children needed. Prefer at least one year of college. Will train applicants with limited experience who can provide quality references as to the applicants work ethic, positive attitude, an aptitude for learning and ability to work with children, peers and older adults with diverse social and cultural backgrounds.
- Experience and knowledge to plan, develop, administer and supervise youth activities.
- Ability to communicate effectively with the public.
- Must be cooperative, dedicated, reliable, patient and mature.
- Must be First-Aid and CPR certified by the beginning of camp. Certification is included in the Camp Counselor training the week prior to the beginning of camps.
After notification of hire, the following will be required:
- Social Security card
- Photo ID
- Certification of bank deposit slip for direct deposit of payroll
- CPR and first aid certification by the first day of camp
- Satisfactory results of a criminal history record check, including fingerprinting. This is provided by Fairfax County as part of the employee onboarding process
