DESCRIPTION:Art from South Lakes High School and Langston Hughes Middle School students\nReception: Wednesday\, March 11\, 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. \nArt from South Lakes High School and Langston Hughes Middle School students is exuberantly displayed on the walls of Reston Community Center Hunters Woods during March. Talented and articulate\, these students present viewers with a myriad of bold and colorful works. \nThe Middle School is named after Langston Hughes\, a prolific writer of the twentieth century who wrote several volumes of poetry\, short stories\, dramas\, a Broadway play and two autobiographies\, primarily about African Americans. \nSouth Lake High School’s art teacher\, Marco Rando\, recently received the 2025 ArtsFairfax Education Award. The award recognizes artists and arts organizations that provide exceptional arts education opportunities and experiences. \nAs a teacher\, Mr. Rando empowers students to take on the full creative process of large-scale public sculptures. He creates a professional\, collaborative environment where students develop real-world skills in design\, engineering and fabrication. His open-door policy welcomes all grade levels\, fostering an inclusive space where creativity and critical thinking thrive! DESCRIPTION:A painting and photography group exhibit by members of the League of Reston Artists \n“Artful Adventures” displays paintings and photographs by member artists who were tasked with finding art in unexpected places. Their journeys\, near and far\, short and long\, focuses on personal growth and transforming their experiences into personal art forms. \nThe League of Reston Artists (LRA) is an active and enthusiastic group of diverse visual fine artists\, photographers and supporters of the arts for over 50 years. Its dual mission is to: \n\nProvide its members with opportunities to grow\, learn and exhibit their creative accomplishments.\nProvide the local community with opportunities to experience and appreciate a wide range of visual art and gain insight into the creative process.\n\nWith guest speakers and artist demonstrations\, we offer learning and inspiration while raising awareness and appreciation of the arts through our numerous exhibits\, shows\, events and quarterly meetings. We welcome both artists and members of the public to join us. \n LRA is a non-profit 501(c)(3) volunteer-run organization that sponsors Reston Photographic Society and provides an annual scholarship to promising high school seniors who will continue their education in the visual arts. Minimal annual dues entitle active artists to a variety of exhibition\, learning\, community and volunteer opportunities. SUMMARY:The Last Four Years Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Mixed Media Paintings by Jessica Winfield \n“The Last 4 Years” marks the beginning of my painting journey – a creative spark that ignited in 2022\, inspired by a single memory from 12th grade. Back in the year 2000\, an art teacher handed me a seashell and asked me to paint it. I wasn’t a painter\, but I created a sunset‑colored shell that felt like pure magic. I carried that feeling quietly for years without ever painting again … until 2022\, when life nudged me back toward creativity. \nAfter stepping away from theatre and spending years in the IT world\, I found myself completely burnt out and disconnected from the creative energy that had always fueled me. I needed something to wake up that part of myself again – something joyful\, colorful and freeing. Painting became that spark. What started as a simple attempt to reconnect with a long‑buried memory quickly grew into a vibrant new artistic path. \nAs a professional lighting designer\, I’ve always described my work as “painting for the stage\,” so it felt natural to bring that love of vivid color\, contrast and atmosphere into my canvases. I’ve always been drawn to bright\, electric hues – even though my favorite color is black – and this collection leans joyfully into that contradiction. In a beautiful full‑circle moment\, painting didn’t just open a new door – it brought me back home to the theatre. Creating these pieces rekindled my passion for design\, and I’m now joyfully lighting stages again. It feels especially meaningful to share this collection in the very place where I work\, create and tell stories through light every day: the theatre. \nThese pieces explore landscapes\, figures\, mermaids\, birds\, flowers and Afro‑Caribbean influences\, all filtered through my love of fantasy\, brightness and emotional color. I use fluorescents\, pearlescents and color‑shifting paints and more recently I’ve been embellishing the work with gems\, crystals and unique textures as I explore mixed‑media techniques. Everything is designed to shimmer\, surprise and feel alive. \nThis collection is about joy – about the way bright color can lift a spirit\, spark a smile or shift a day. “The Last 4 Years” is my invitation for viewers to feel the same brightness that painting brought into my life. I hope these works bring as much happiness to others as they brought to me while creating them.

SUMMARY:Rainbow lll Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Acrylic Paintings Inspired by Colors of Nature by Touran Mahdaviazar \nLocal artist\, Touran Mahdaviazar\, an immigrant from Iran\, presents just a few of her colorful acrylic artworks at Reston Community Center Hunters Woods from December 2 to January 15\, 2026. \n  \nAs a child\, Touran always found comfort and joy in drawing and painting.  She has not had any formal training but is a natural talent. She was always inspired by the wonder and beauty of colors in nature.  She incorporates bright colors in all her work. \nWhen she was a school age girl\, most of her notebooks and textbooks were covered with her drawings. Now in her retirement years\, she has returned to her love of painting and has produced numerous works of art that hang in the homes of her friends and family. Her colorful depictions of nature and people bring peace and joy to the viewer.  \n  \n“When I start a new painting\, I am in a different world where I cannot hear or see anything around me\, and I do not realize the passing of time” Touran says.  She hopes to inspire a new generation to pursue their talent\, inspiration and passion.

As they are creating their pieces\, they are asking questions like: What’s the duck’s name? Where do ducks live? Why are ducks important for our wetland? How can we protect them? DESCRIPTION:Reception: Sunday\, December 8\, 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. \nMaria Mosanu\nWith 30 years of art experience\, Maria continues to amaze with her talent. Her art is featured in many countries\, including Italy\, Moldova\, Russia and the U.S.. Maria even created custom art for the royal family in Italy. Maria is an exceptional artist and art teacher who instructs students of all ages\, from children to adults\, nurturing countless talents along the way. With extensive experience in various art techniques\, she continually seeks innovative ways to adapt art to the modern world. Her remarkable expertise brings visions to life\, creating paintings that captivate anyone who sees them. Through her teaching\, she has inspired many to appreciate art and discover their own artistic abilities. \nNina Joffey\nNina explores the theme of harmony in art through a multifaceted lens. Her inspiration as an artist is rooted in traveling and immersing herself in the vibrant tapestry of everyday life\, people\, nature and the exquisite beauty of flowers. While Nina experiments with several media and styles\, her current favorite is oil in a semi-traditional style. She loves to paint cities and landscapes\, seeing the beauty in simple things.  Each piece serves as a reminder that art is not just a reflection of reality but a bridge to greater appreciation and harmony in our lives. Nina’s award-winning work is exhibited in several Vienna and Reston galleries. She is a member of the League of Reston Artists and the Vienna Art Society. She participates in the League’s “Art in Public Places” project\, where her work is exhibited in libraries\, community centers and hospitals. She designed and painted benches that were auctioned for fundraising\, as part of the Vienna Art Society project “Take a Seat Vienna.” For more information\, visit  www.ninajoffey.com. \nEva Guna\nThis is the first exhibition for Eva Guna\, an emerging artist with a distinct vision of a complex world. Influenced by Eastern religious traditions\, particularly Hinduism and Buddhism\, she strives to embody the concepts of balance and interconnectedness in her art. Utilizing both oil and acrylic mediums\, she seeks to create a delicate balance through the dynamic interplay of light and dark\, brightness and haze\, reality and abstraction. DESCRIPTION:Artworks by Nina Joffey\nReception: Sunday\, July 14 • 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. \nNina Joffey discovered painting unexpectedly. Her friends took her to a sip-and paint event where she immediately fell in love with painting.  An early retirement after many years of work in the Information Technology sector provided the time needed to explore her new passion. \nNina’s painting voyage began in 2017 when she started taking art classes at Reston Community Center and with some well-known artists. She explored art through international painting trips with artists like Christine Lashley\, Adrianne Wyman\, and Walt Bartman.  Painting helped her to discover a new world and a new self. “Art helps to open the eyes on the beauty of the world; notice things you did not notice before and makes you more observant and curious. “ \nIn 2021 Nina had a solo exhibition at Reston Community Center Hunters Woods where she presented more than 100 paintings.  More recently was a solo exhibition at Arts Herndon.  Nina is a member of the League of Reston Artists as well as the Vienna Art Society.  She participates in the League’s “Art in Public Places” where her work is exhibited in public areas like libraries\, community centers\, and hospitals. She regularly exhibits her work in several Vienna and Reston galleries and has received many awards. With the Vienna Art Society she was involved in the project ‘Take a Seat Vienna’ and designed and painted two benches in 2023. These benches were auctioned in November to private and commercial buyers. \nNina is experimenting with media and styles\, but her favorite at this moment is oil in a semi-traditional style. She loves to do portraiture\, as well as to paint nature and cities. As a teenager\, Reggie was intrigued by the gorgeous color landscape slide images his Uncle Teddy presented after family trips. He wondered about the processes needed to create such beauty\, ached to be able to afford an SLR camera\, and hoped that one day he’d show his uncle pictures just as beautiful. \nReggie’s first (Ricoh) SLR camera photographed his high school track team and street scenes around New York City. Self-taught\, he most often used B&W film — learning how to develop negatives and print in his Queens\, NY basement washroom. \n“I love the spontaneity of street photography and the way shadows can momentarily transform streets and people. I am also drawn towards seascapes\, landscapes\, and sports car racing — with a nod towards the romantic cinematography of old auto racing and naval (WWII) movies\,” Reggie says. “I’ve participated in workshops at the Maine Media School and with Alison Shaw\, a wonderful New England photojournalist and Fine Arts photographer\, who influences my use of color and separation.” \nReggie has been a member of the Loudoun Photography Club\, the League of Reston Artists\, Philadelphia Photo Arts Center and displays images in local Virginia venues. I don’t consider myself a professional photographer as the word ‘photographer’ holds great meaning for me. Instead\, I’m an enthusiastic hobbyist who loves capturing moments through photography\, particularly focusing on nature and wildlife.” \nBecause Shan has always been an outdoor enthusiast and animal lover\, photography seemed a natural fit for \nhis interests. “I enjoy hiking\, stargazing\, birdwatching\, and traveling; our world is vast\, and there’s so much to explore.” He acquired his first DSLR camera about 20 years ago when his son was born to preserve those precious moments of life. While those early “point-and-shoot” photos were good at the time\, his passion for photography at a higher level began about eight years ago. “I sought to improve my skills\, partly because my kids were no longer as willing to pose for me.” \nWhat drives his passion for photography? “In our fast-paced lives\, finding time to take and edit photos offers me much-needed tranquility and solitude. DESCRIPTION:A Collection of Artworks by Patricia Macintyre \nReston\, VA. On New Year’s Eve in 1986\, Pat Macintyre founded the Reston Art Gallery and Studios (RAGS) on historic Lake Anne Plaza. It has been a thriving enclave for visual artists to work and display their art ever since. “Retrospective” is an impressive collection of works created throughout her artistic career. \nFor more than thirty years Pat has been involved in the local arts community as a founder and board member of several Herndon and Reston organizations: the Council for the Arts of Herndon (Art in Public Places)\, League of Reston Artists\, Herndon Old Town Gallery\, Reston Historic Trust\, and the Arts Alliance. She has been the Art Resource teacher for many years at Reston Children’s Center. Her Saturday workshops at RAGS for children are educational and fun. \nPat produced and acted in Reston Television Theatre’s Shenandoah Night Train and Ken Ludwig’s The Prodigal. Her work is honored in Embassy collections of the nations that helped in return of US citizens during the Iran Hostage Affair. She assisted with the Korean War Veterans Memorial\, has works displayed at the Congressional Gala\, toured the US as a fundraiser and exhibited at Presidential groundbreaking ceremonies and dedications. \nView this exhibit of historic places and stunning art of all sizes from Pat Macintyre’s life as an artist during May.

SUMMARY:Serendipity in the Woods
DESCRIPTION:“Serendipity in the Woods” celebrates works of ten Reston area artists – Regina Adams\, Karen Danenberger\, Denise Dittmar\, Margot Lebow\, Julia Tova Malakoff\, Joanne Roberts-Wittauer\, Donna Ross\, Ruth Sievers\, Melanie Zucker Stanley\, and Marie Georgette Wright – who met through area art venues. Their art encompasses the bold and colorful\, the abstract and eclectic\, the meditative and cathartic. The styles and media they work with are as diverse as the women themselves. \nRegina Adams: Regina Adams is a Reston-based visual artist and voice teacher who seeks to bring more beauty and joy into the world through her teaching and creations. Regina launched Songbird Voice Studios in 2015. “I am on a mission to empower women and girls to connect to their creativity through song.” With the studio now in full swing\, Regina enjoys creating art whenever she isn’t busy teaching music. Regina’s art includes vintage finds and patterns of all kinds. A lively palette forms the basis for her inspiration. Her style can be described as a nod to the past mixed with a quest for adventure. \nKaren Danenberger: As a young artist\, Karen spent two summers in Venice\, Italy\, through NYU’s Summer Abroad Program where water reflections and the emotive qualities of color first became central themes in her artwork. Many of her paintings still feature the images and feelings generated in scenes depicting water along with themes of nature and family. Karen has over 30 years of experience in art creation and instruction\, and is an active member of the League of Reston Artists. \nDenise Dittmar: For the past ten years\, Denise has been an art instructor for children\, teens and adults at Glen Echo Park in Maryland. After receiving a master’s degree in landscape architecture and working in that field for eight years\, she taught high school art in the Dallas area. She paints both abstractly and representationally and enjoys drawing and painting portraits and landscape inspired work. Now living in Sterling\, Virginia\, she says\, “I love living near so many beautiful parks for hiking and getting into nature and also having so many museums and cultural resources nearby.” \nMargot Hahn Lebow: Margot has been painting since the age of eight. In the 1970’s she studied at the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan and was influenced by artists from the Minimalist-Conceptualist art movements. At a later stage\, she discovered the Merz paintings of German artist Kurt Schwitters\, and these became the ultimate influence on her style. She has been developing her unique style of collage and mixed media in Europe\, Egypt and America for the past thirty years. She has exhibited in various public places\, including the Gallery at Queens College\, New York; Morgana Gallery in Cairo\, Egypt and in private collections in the U.S. and abroad. \nJulia Tova Malakoff: Julia’s mixed media paintings\, inspired by nature and everyday objects are vibrant and uplifting\, telling stories through texture and tone. “Nature encourages me to take a closer look at our world\, bringing to light the subtle and whimsical moments\,” she says. Bold bursts of color push through shaded foliage; vivid imagery from our daily lives is layered against cool and calm. Julia has written children’s picture books and teaches a mixed media art class\, Make Your Mark at the Workhouse Center for the Arts in Lorton. \nJoanne Roberts-Wittauer: Joanne’s earliest creative memories are seeing all the colors of crayons in the Crayola box. “I would scribble and change the colors freely\, exploring so many possibilities on paper\,” she says. 20 years ago\, when her husband began his wine import business\, Joanne started painting as they traveled throughout the United States and Europe. She describes herself as an abstract expressionist painter who looks to artists like Picasso\, Hoffman\, Matisse\, Diebenkorn and Richter for inspiration and motivation. Her work is exhibited in restaurants\, retail stores and other places in the U.S. and abroad. \nDonna Ross: “My absolute happy place is anywhere near water so it’s no surprise I love working in watercolors!”\, Donna says. Her passion for landscapes is the result of a long career in a crazy busy industry and finding beauty and stillness in nature. She returned to focusing on watercolor landscapes during the lockdown. The mixture of water and pigment lets her express the light\, tranquility and texture experienced in nature. She adds\, “It makes me excited when I find my paint mingling and flowing across the paper and see a wind-swept ocean dune. I hope my art takes the viewer to these special places.” \nRuth Sievers: Ruth is a painter\, collage artist and photographer. While she pursued a career in writing and editing\, working for D.C.-area nonprofits and the U.S. Copyright Office\, she has always tried to find time for art. She studied with Joe Shannon at the Corcoran for several years and for many years with Diane Tesler and other Art League instructors. Her favorite subjects are people\, especially friends and family\, and others in public places. Ruth holds a bachelor of science from the University of Maryland\, with a major in journalism. She has a studio with the Columbia Pike Artists in Arlington\, Virginia. \nMelanie Zucker Stanley: Melanie’s parents were a huge influence on her art. Her mother was a singer and painter\, and her father was a musician. “Our home was filled with an ongoing flow of creative vibrancy.\,” she says. To create richness in her art\, Melanie uses hand painted rice papers to help build layers and textures and colors. She also works with water-based paints\, drawing tools and mixed media. If asked what her style is\, she would answer “Bright\, luscious COLOR and TEXTURE!” Melanie is a member of many art organizations and teaches art to children and adults in local galleries and in her home. She has written and published six children’s books. “I enjoy creating art…and inspiring others to find their artistic voice!” \nMarie Georgette Wright. “I paint what I love. The small things that make me happy – a little slice of nature\, an animal\, colors of the sun\, my family – all have found their way onto my canvases.” While working in a stained-glass studio in San Diego\, Marie was introduced to the luminescent power of transparent color and light. She worked with Hudson River Valley artists after moving to the East Coast where she found the joy of transparent watercolor washes. Later she added acrylics and mixed media to her palette\, frequently using bits of tissue and rice papers imprinted with impressions of leaves from her garden. “The colors of my life are a crazy quilt of bits and pieces\, and so it goes with my art.”

In trying times\, I take solace in the memories of the places I’ve been. These paintings are my way of trying to reconnect with these moments in time. \nGrowing up\, I faced a lot of difficulties: material luxuries were not something that we could often afford. However\, I don’t ever recall feeling as though I missed out on anything – my childhood was spent running through the thick jungles\, swimming in the lakes and discovering hidden vistas. There was a beautiful simplicity to it. \nIn contrast\, my daughter Laura’s paintings reflect a more contemporary upbringing. With vivid colors and experimental concepts\, she demonstrates the vast difference in generational rearing. While we both share a passion for art\, our experiences dramatically impact how we express ourselves. \nThat was always my dream\, to provide my children with the opportunity to explore places and avenues I couldn’t even conceive of when I was their age\, I take immense pride in the dichotomy of our art. SUMMARY:With Love To Planet Earth
DESCRIPTION:Oil paintings by Ramziya Shakirova. \nRamziya Shakirova is an artist residing in Virginia\, US. She works primarily in oils\, and while she prefers to paint in the contemporary impressionism style\, she also works in other styles\, including abstractionism and surrealism. \nRamziya is also a social scientist\, and she has spent much of her career in academia and research and in the corporate world. A self-taught artist\, she has been involved in the arts since childhood\, from drawing to creative writing. For Ramziya\, the language of fine art\, through its endless combination of shapes\, colors and textures\, is the universal language to reach hearts and communicate across cultures\, as well as the best way to express her admiration for Nature\, which is an endless source of inspiration for her. \nRamziya’s “With Love to Planet Earth” exhibit at the RCC features her landscapes and seascapes\, many of them done en plein air (outdoors)\, as well as floral still-life paintings painted from direct observation. The main motifs of the exhibit are an ode to the Earth’s endless beauty and admiration for nature in all of its many manifestations. DESCRIPTION:The Lake Life Series\nDigital Serigraph Limited Edition Prints Reflecting Life on Reston Lakes By Sam LaFever  \n Sam LaFever is an accomplished artist. He is also a tugboat Captain inspired by the view from the wheelhouse while working routes between Maine to New Orleans. His exhibit at Reston Community Center Hunters Woods in July and August is closer to home. “The Lake Life Series” displays digital serigraph limited edition prints reflecting life on Reston lakes.  \nLaFever’s work is shown locally and regionally at galleries in Richmond\, Portsmouth\, Norfolk and Annapolis. His focus is broad; landscape painting\, printmaking\, seascapes\, watercraft\, industrial themes\, architectural waterfronts and city front scenes along waterways in mediums like oil\, watercolor\, Itaglio printmaking\, lithography\, and graphic design.  \n“My current work reflects the waterfront I know. Tugs\, sailing craft\, light houses\, waterfowl\, city fronts\, and classic watercraft have always commanded my attention and piqued my interest\,” Sam states.  \nMuch of his art consists of constructing digital works using the Adobe Creative Suite of products to make art in layers of colored shapes. The process is similar to the manner in which a serigraph is composed of layers of color applied over one another-some opaque\, some transparent.  \n“I call this process “Digital Serigraphy”\, or “Digital Serigraph.” The style is reminiscent of the “Fruit Crate Art” of the late 1800’s. The process of layering color\, as in creating a serigraph or “silkscreen” print is well suited to creating prints digitally. SUMMARY:Traverse: Paintings by Elizabeth Matthews
DESCRIPTION:Reston\, VA – Elizabeth Matthews is interested in wayfinding research and interference navigation. “Traverse” addresses both moving around and through an area or space and also overcoming the obstacles that interrupt that movement. She creates artworks that address spatial navigation using oil on canvas and works on paper in a variety of mediums. Visit her unique exhibit during May at Reston Community Center Hunters Woods. \nMatthews is an oil painter working in the style of New Romanticism using dramatic landscape as a metaphor and setting to reframe challenging life experiences. She lives and works in the Washington\, DC metro area with a studio in Bethesda\, MD. She was born in Salt Lake City and taught art in the Utah school system for ten years. Her education includes an M.Ed. in teaching and learning from Utah State University; and a BFA from Brigham Young University in painting and drawing; she has a K-12 teaching certification and a gifted and talented endorsement. \nMatthews recently won first place in acrylic at the 47th Community Art Show at the Women’s Club of Chevy Chase in Maryland (April 2023) and received a painting award at the Art League in Alexandria\, Virginia (January 2023). In 2022 “Great Falls at Dusk” was highlighted by Jane Franklin Dance Company in the Potomac River Life exhibit at the Athenaeum\, Alexandria\, Virginia and additional presentations. She has work in the respected Utah art collection of Salt Lake Community College\, and her work was recognized with multiple painting awards at The Art League Gallery in Alexandria\, VA (2022); “Painting of Exceptional Merit” artist award from Rehoboth Art League (2022 & 2021); and an FY21 EMGRR artist award from Arts Fairfax (2020). Other distinctions include solo exhibits at Bountiful Davis Art Center (2020) and Finch Lane Gallery (2019); and painting awards at Utah Valley University’s Woodbury Gallery (2020) and the Springville Museum of Art (2017). \nAbove Image: Single Tree\, Oil on Canvas
