SUMMARY:Five By Seven Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Mixed Media and Oil Paintings by Karen Rose Loehr\nReception: Sunday\, February 15\, 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. \nKaren’s Rose Loehr’s exhibit during February is an exploration of process over finished product: a call and response versus direct observation. Most of her works began as taped-off grids on 24-by-18-inch sheets of paper and were developed through cycles of mark-making\, obliteration and further mark-making. As layers are added and erased\, each section of the grid gradually emerges with its own identity\, fully revealed when the tape is removed. This process allows for accidents and chance to play a critical role in the final piece. \nThis is Karen’s first exhibit in the gallery dedicated to her mother\, Jo Ann Rose. It is particularly meaningful because when Jo Ann became ill\, Karen took her seat on the RCC Board of Governors and helped make her mother’s dream of having an exhibition space in Reston a reality. \nKaren is a DMV-based artist working in Reston\, Virginia. She attended the Corcoran School of Art and has shown her work primarily in the Washington\, D.C. area. \nOn Sunday\, February 15\, please join her during the opening reception from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the Jo Ann Rose Gallery. \nContact: Karen Rose Loehr: karenloehr@gmail.com

SUMMARY:“From Wood to Watercolor” Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Watercolor Paintings by Don Janus\n \nReception: Sunday\, January 11\, 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. \n“From Wood to Watercolor” speaks to the primary elements underpinning my creative process. From journeyman carpenter to master woodworker\, sometime potter and avid sketcher\, I have always been creating things with my hands. \nMy initial foray from sketcher to watercolorist was at the behest of Lubna Zahid\, a fine artist and former RCC instructor\, who encouraged me to try my hand at painting. Other strong influences include Christine Lashley\, Diane Ellor and Vicky Zhou\, along with a group of painting friends who continue to inspire me. \nThe essential through-line connecting my creative experience is the ability to envision how to manifest a desired outcome. That line flows directly into watercolor\, where it takes a practiced hand to brush paint onto paper and bring my vision to light. Many courses\, online immersions and museum visits later\, with some homage images on display here\, you can see my influences span Edward Seago\, Edward Wesson\, James McNeil Whistler\, Andrew Wyeth\, Issac Levitan and Chiura Obata. \nAs also evidenced in this exhibit\, I gravitate toward portraying structures in rural landscapes\, particularly the decrepit\, weathered remnants that I have witnessed across Rappahannock County where I have built my studio. I also have an affinity for certain furry and feathered creatures.

SUMMARY:“What We Love” Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Acrylic and mixed media paintings by Alfa Tate-O’Neill \nAlfa Tate-O’Neill is a Washington\, D.C.-based artist who transforms personal photographs into mixed-media paintings infused with a hint of magical realism. Born in Zurich and raised in the U.S.\, she spent over 35 years marketing iconic Hollywood films before shifting her creative energy toward fine art. Her works blend acrylic paint\, photography and hand-applied “bling” (rhinestones or jewelry)\, bringing cherished moments of family\, friends\, pets and places vividly to life on canvas. \n“What We Love\,” Alfa’s exhibit in the Jo Ann Rose Gallery from November 4 to December 1\, displays 60 of these exemplary works. It encourages all of us to focus on cherished aspects of life\, including the things we love\, especially during these challenging times. She shares some things that she loves with the hope that you will share what you love with her. \nSince relocating from Los Angeles to Washington with her White Swiss Shepherd\, Marco\, Alfa has exhibited with organizations including the Alexandria Arts Commission\, The Art League\, Nepenthe Gallery\, Annmarie Sculpture Garden\, Las Laguna Art Gallery and West Elm. Her mission: to celebrate joy\, humanity and spirituality through art that is as intimate as it is luminous. \nFor information on the “Meet the Artist” event on Sunday November 9\, go to Alfa’s website: alfadesignllc.com or send her an email. Light refreshments will be served\, and guests are encouraged to vote for their favorite piece during the event – the winner of a drawing will be able to keep that painting! \n

SUMMARY:League of Reston Artists: artRESTON Painters Exhibit Reception
DESCRIPTION:“TELL ME SOMETHING WITH FLOWERS” \n“Tell Me Something with Flowers\,” conceived and curated by Antonella Manganelli for the League of Reston Artists\, is a call for artists to speak softly\, powerfully and symbolically through floral language. Throughout history\, flowers have whispered what words could not: messages of love\, remembrance\, compassion\, protest and peace. Their symbolic language has transcended borders and cultures\, offering a delicate but potent voice to emotion and intention. In times when the brutality used in language and actions dominate\, “Tell Me Something with Flowers” invites artists to return to grace and seeks works that harness floral imagery as a medium of dialogue\, expressing resilience\, resistance and hope. \n“Following its warmly received debut at Alley in Washington\, D.C.\, featuring the talented artists of Art4US\, ‘Tell Me Something with Flowers’ now enters its second stage of exhibition\,” Antonella said. “This evolving showcase continues to celebrate the symbolic language of flowers as vessels of emotion\, storytelling and peace. We’re proud to feature 30 artists from Maryland\, D.C. and Virginia\, each contributing a unique voice to this symbolic and poetic exhibition.” \nDebra Wright\, the judge for the exhibit\, is an artist and curator based in Northern Virginia. Her work as a found object\, installation and avant-garde artist explores themes of social justice\, human rights and personal identity. Wright’s art has been exhibited internationally in traditional venues\, as well as in public art installations throughout the Washington metropolitan area. \nJoin us on Sunday\, October 19 at 2:00 p.m. for a vibrant afternoon celebrating “Tell Me Something with Flowers.” The event will include remarks from Debra Wright\, the awards judge\, artist talks and a poetry reading by Mike Maggio. Light refreshments will be served. \nExhibition: October 6 – November 3

SUMMARY:"The Creative Quest: Three Generations of Intuitive Painting" Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Reston Community Center’s Jo Ann Rose Gallery will host a vibrant group exhibition featuring over 30 works by intuitive painter Judith Forst and many of her students and their students. “The Creative Quest: Three Generations of Intuitive Painting” opens to the public on February 4\, 2025 and will remain on view through March 2\, 2025. \nInspired by the teachings of Michele Cassou\, who founded the Painting Experience in San Francisco\, California\, Reston resident Judith Forst transformed her traditional painting practice from an academic based approach to one focused on painting without inhibition. Focusing on the process rather than a product or desired result led to a freedom of expression and the discovery of a compelling authentic voice. Ms. Forst began sharing this technique in her home studio in 2001 and dozens of local artists have been exposed to this innovative practice. A selection of Judith’s paintings will be featured along with works by 17 other intuitive painters. As a whole\, the paintings are exuberant and colorful – ranging from meticulously detailed images and patterns to mysterious and compelling inner landscapes.

SUMMARY:We Come Together Through Art Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Encaustic & acrylic paintings by Robert Thiel\nAcrylic paintings by James Ondo and Patricia Kentz \nReception: Sunday\, November 3 • 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. \nAfter practicing dentistry for over 30 years in Northern Virginia\, Patsy Kentz pursued a second career as an artist. She found that the same attention to detail in dentistry applied to art as well. Patsy was soon commissioned to do house portraits for families in northern Virginia and began painting scenes of the beach\, reflecting her love for the area. Although painting has become Patsy’s second career\, she does not consider it a job\, describing it as a form of meditation. Her work can be viewed at patsykentz.com. \nJim Ondo has enjoyed both oil and acrylic painting as a hobby throughout his careers in the US Army and as an engineering contractor in the Washington\, D.C. area. After retiring\, he and his wife Patsy Kentz took formal lessons from Pam Jarrett\, Arnold Lopes and most recently\, Rob Thiel. Being close to amazing artists has brought him joy and allowed him to continue learning painting skills and techniques. \nRetirement has given Robert Thiel\, a self-taught artist\, the opportunity to expand his artistry to encompass various subjects and mediums. His exploration has led him to encaustic painting (using beeswax) and the use of cold wax mixed with oil paint\, leading to a more abstract perspective. His artwork is inspired by nature and travel\, and he also teaches acrylic art at the Reston Community Center when he is not playing pickleball. More of his work can be seen here:  https://mcthiel.wixsite.com/rtphoto \n

SUMMARY:Shaped by Reston Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Acrylic abstracts by Dr. Joe Hyman.\nAcrylic abstracts\, fantasy portraits\, and landscapes by Mia Merin. \nLiving in the seasonally dynamic landscape of Reston’s lush forestland for a combined total of over ninety years\, local artists Mia Merin and Joe Hyman have been inspired to create art based on their local surroundings\, personal  travels\, and their vivid imaginations. These family friends  are joining forces to present a show composed of abstracts\, fantasy portraits\, and landscapes. \nIn 1971\, Joe and Janet Hyman moved into their new house in Reston’s Hunters Woods community. Joe\, a clinical psychologist\, opened Reston’s first clinical psychologist private practice in his home. He designed and built a new facility on South Lakes Drive\, adjacent to the USGS\, called The Counseling and Therapy Building. Joe began creating abstract geometric paintings on canvas. His intuitive and non-objective painting process results in colorful\, complex artwork that evokes various emotions and joy. He is pleased to share his art alongside the work of Mia Merin\, a longtime Restonian and family friend. \nMia Merin\, a Reston resident since 1987\, has a background in geology and art. She creates landscape paintings based on her favorite hikes and uses art as an outlet for emotions. During the pandemic\, she found inspiration from a 1988 Soviet Art exchange and engaged with the works of Matisse. She explored new perspectives on creating art through Zoom meetings and followed a method by Shiloh Sophia\, resulting in abstract paintings that reflect personal experiences and emotions. Mia believes that art’s meaning is subjective and belongs to the beholder. \n. \nReception: Sunday\, July 28 • 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
