SUMMARY:Youth Art Month Recetpion
DESCRIPTION:Art from South Lakes High School and Langston Hughes Middle School students \nArt from South Lakes High School and Langston Hughes Middle School students is exuberantly displayed on the walls of Reston Community Center Hunters Woods during March. Talented and articulate\, these students present viewers with a myriad of bold and colorful works. \nThe Middle School is named after Langston Hughes\, a prolific writer of the twentieth century who wrote several volumes of poetry\, short stories\, dramas\, a Broadway play and two autobiographies\, primarily about African Americans. \nSouth Lake High School’s art teacher\, Marco Rando\, recently received the 2025 ArtsFairfax Education Award. The award recognizes artists and arts organizations that provide exceptional arts education opportunities and experiences. \nAs a teacher\, Mr. Rando empowers students to take on the full creative process of large-scale public sculptures. He creates a professional\, collaborative environment where students develop real-world skills in design\, engineering and fabrication. His open-door policy welcomes all grade levels\, fostering an inclusive space where creativity and critical thinking thrive! Many former students return each year to support the program\, a testament to his lasting influence. \nContact: Marco Rando MRRando@fcps.edu

DESCRIPTION:View the 3:00 p.m. show. \nLittle Dickens. Short Longfellow. Reduced Proust. All the Great Books. Less is More. The literary canon explodes as the Reduced Shakespeare Company once again unleashes a comic outrage on an unsuspecting public. \nThe Bad Boys of Abridgment take you on a ninety-eight-minute roller-coaster ride through their compact compendium of the world’s great books in “All The Great Books (abridged).” Buckle up and hop aboard as they zip through everything you didn’t get around to reading in school. \nIn the spirit of Shakespeare’s comedies\, RSC shows contain comic depictions of violence\, mild innuendo\, bawdy language and the occasional rude word. All children (and parents) are different\, so we’ve chosen to rate our shows PG-13: Pretty Good If You’re Thirteen. \n

SUMMARY:Five By Seven Reception
DESCRIPTION:Five By Seven Exhibit – Mixed Media and Oil Paintings by Karen Rose Loehr \nKaren’s Rose Loehr’s exhibit during February is an exploration of process over finished product: a call and response versus direct observation. Most of her works began as taped-off grids on 24-by-18-inch sheets of paper and were developed through cycles of mark-making\, obliteration and further mark-making. As layers are added and erased\, each section of the grid gradually emerges with its own identity\, fully revealed when the tape is removed. This process allows for accidents and chance to play a critical role in the final piece. \nThis is Karen’s first exhibit in the gallery dedicated to her mother\, Jo Ann Rose. It is particularly meaningful because when Jo Ann became ill\, Karen took her seat on the RCC Board of Governors and helped make her mother’s dream of having an exhibition space in Reston a reality. \nKaren is a DMV-based artist working in Reston\, Virginia. She attended the Corcoran School of Art and has shown her work primarily in the Washington\, D.C. area. \nOn Sunday\, February 15\, please join her during the opening reception from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the Jo Ann Rose Gallery. \nContact: Karen Rose Loehr   karenloehr@gmail.com
