SUMMARY:The Reston Museum: Reston at the Forefront of Community Desegregations
DESCRIPTION:The Reston Museum was founded in 1996 as a community nonprofit organization that preserves the past\, informs the present\, and influences the future of Reston through its exhibits\, public programs and events\, including Founder’s Day\, the Reston Home Tour\, and Lake Anne Cardboard Boat Regatta. Reston Museum is located at Lake Anne Plaza\, is free to visit\, and offers exhibits and a gift shop. \nDiscover how Reston’s founding principles challenged the status quo of the 1960s. As one of the first integrated communities in the United States\, Reston was at the vanguard of desegregation in housing. This event\, held during Black History Month\, features long-time residents and community leaders Ken Plum and Bev Cosham. They will share personal stories and reflections on Reston’s role in advancing civil rights and creating a more inclusive community. Celebrate the vision and impact of Reston’s commitment to diversity from its inception to the present day.

SUMMARY:“From Wood to Watercolor” Reception
DESCRIPTION:Watercolor Paintings by Don Janus\n \nReception: Sunday\, January 11\, 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. \n“From Wood to Watercolor” speaks to the primary elements underpinning my creative process. From journeyman carpenter to master woodworker\, sometime potter and avid sketcher\, I have always been creating things with my hands. \nMy initial foray from sketcher to watercolorist was at the behest of Lubna Zahid\, a fine artist and former RCC instructor\, who encouraged me to try my hand at painting. Other strong influences include Christine Lashley\, Diane Ellor and Vicky Zhou\, along with a group of painting friends who continue to inspire me. \nThe essential through-line connecting my creative experience is the ability to envision how to manifest a desired outcome. That line flows directly into watercolor\, where it takes a practiced hand to brush paint onto paper and bring my vision to light. Many courses\, online immersions and museum visits later\, with some homage images on display here\, you can see my influences span Edward Seago\, Edward Wesson\, James McNeil Whistler\, Andrew Wyeth\, Issac Levitan and Chiura Obata. \nAs also evidenced in this exhibit\, I gravitate toward portraying structures in rural landscapes\, particularly the decrepit\, weathered remnants that I have witnessed across Rappahannock County where I have built my studio. I also have an affinity for certain furry and feathered creatures.
