He has also recorded with David Sanborn\, Bobby Caldwell (“After Dark”)\, New York Voices (“Let It Snow”)\, Bohemian Caverns All-Stars\, Amina Figarova Sextet and the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra under the direction of David Baker. As an avid believer in educating the next generation\, Baker serves as an adjunct professor of saxophone at the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University. \n

SUMMARY:Happy Hour with Darden & Friends: Janelle Gill
DESCRIPTION:Pianist Janelle Gill brings listeners on an ethereal journey that transcends the boundaries of jazz. Through her work of self-exploration as it exists in music\, she has tapped into a vein of fluidity that heals with sound. Born and raised in Washington\, D.C.\, Gill is a graduate of Duke Ellington School of the Arts and attended Howard University. Her unique musical expression has brought her to work closely with musicians such as Delfeayo Marsalis\, Oliver Lake\, David Murray\, The Blackbyrds and Maurice Hines in “Tapping through Life” as well as local artists including Marshall Keys\, Nasar Abadey and Kris Funn. Some of the venues she has been in concert include The Kennedy Center\, The Library of Congress\, DC Jazz Festival\, North Sea Jazz Festival\, Montreux Jazz Festival and Baku Jazz Festival. As Janelle continues to be a student of life and welcomes new experiences\, she recently expanded her titles to musical director for the production of Toni Morrison’s “Desdemona\,” which debuted at the Source Theater. She remains a musical educator to everyone of all walks of life.

SUMMARY:Happy Hour with Darden & Friends: Matt Niess and The Capitol Bones
DESCRIPTION:The Capitol Bones was forged in 1990 into a trombone band like no other. The Capitol Bones has performed concerts at schools\, concert halls and festivals for over 30 years including the Jazz Education Network Conference\, The Kennedy Center Millenium Stage\, American Trombone Workshop\, National Jazz Workshop\, The Kennedy Center Terrace Theatre\, The Birchmere\, Blues Alley and more. The current trombone section has been intact for well over ten years. The Capitol Bones use the Stan Kenton model\, two bass trombones and three tenor trombones. The bass trombonists are the power and stability that the rest of the section locks onto and builds from. DESCRIPTION:Hailing from the Venezuelan Andes\, Fran Vielma is a critically acclaimed and award-winning multi-percussionist\, composer and educator. His continuous research on Pan-American rhythms and beyond is integrated with his attraction to concert music and the freedom of jazz. Vielma recently premiered his suite’s Common Grounds’ at SFJAZZ commissioned by the prestigious New Jazz Works program of Chamber Music America and has been a D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities Fellow since 2019. He has been touring the continent with his Venezuelan Jazz Collective since 2019; “Tendencias\,” his latest release\, includes Vielma’s original works and arrangements and was included in the Best of 2018 lists by Downbeat\, Latin Jazz Network and NYC Jazz Record. Vielma is involved in concerts\, recordings\, tours and festivals around the world with artists such as John Medeski\, George Garzone\, Antonio Sanchez\, Sean Jones\, Randy Brecker\, Troy Roberts\, Gary Thomas\, Marshall Gilkes\, Cesar Orozco\, NEC Jazz Ambassadors\, U.S. Army Blues Band\, Josanne Francis and Luis Enriqueto to name a few. DESCRIPTION:Steve Fidyk is a nationally acclaimed jazz drummer\, composer\, author and educator known for his musical versatility and depth. He is currently a member of the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra and serves on the Jazz Studies faculty at Temple University in Philadelphia. For over 21 years\, Fidyk served as drummer and featured soloist with the Army Blues Big Band\, one of the premier ensembles of The U.S. Army Band’s Pershing’s Own in Washington\, D.C. During his tenure\, he performed for seven U.S. Presidents and toured internationally. He continues to lead his own quintet\, performing original compositions and arrangements and remains active on the national scene. He has worked extensively with saxophonist Walt Weiskopf and the late guitarist Jack Wilkins and was a longtime member of the Jazz Orchestra of Philadelphia\, led by trumpeter Terell Stafford. A prolific recording artist\, Fidyk appears on over 100 albums. His work as a leader includes “Heads Up!” (Posi-Tone\, 2014)\, “Allied Forces” (Posi-Tone\, 2016)\, “Battle Lines” (Blue Canteen Music\, 2020) and “Red Beats” (Blue Canteen Music\, 2023). He also co-led the Taylor/Fidyk Big Band (“A Perfect Match” and “Live at Blues Alley”) and recorded “Big Kids” with saxophonist John DeSalme. An in-demand clinician and author\, Fidyk is an educational consultant for Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Essentially Ellington program and a regular contributor to Modern Drummer Magazine. DESCRIPTION:Multi-talented arranger and vocalist\, Gracie Jay has performed and recorded with artists including Cyrille Aimee\, Nicholas Payton\, Camille Thurman\, Jamison Ross and more. Her written works have been performed by groups including the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra\, Next Generation Big Band and the New Guard Big Band. Part of a rare\, niche category of talented female vocalists\, Gracie is a powerful force on stage\, simultaneously writing and arranging for the same large ensembles that she masterfully sings for. \nGracie serves as a band leader for a diverse collection of musical groups\, including the Colorado-based band J-Calvin\, The New Guard Big Band and\, of course\, her own solo and group projects. Hired for her diverse artistic contributions\, Gracie is known for elevating every group she’s invited to. Performances with these groups include Tucson Jazz Festival\, French Quarter Festival\, Telluride Jazz Festival\, DC Jazz Festival and more. Recently\, Gracie made it to the quarterfinals of the American Traditions Competition. Gracie received her bachelor’s degree in Vocal Performance and Professional Music from Berklee College of Music.
