RESTON, VA — The Reston community will once again enjoy the opportunity to “Discover the World”, as the Reston Multicultural Festival returns to Lake Anne Plaza on Saturday, September 22 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. This signature Reston event honors the diversity that is one of the community’s greatest assets, and brings to life the vision that Reston founder Robert E. Simon had for this unique place. Attendees are encouraged to dress in native attire and share the uniqueness of their cultural roots.
The Festival will open with a Naturalization Ceremony, where America’s newest citizens will take the Oath of Allegiance and continues its tradition of presenting a “melting pot” of free entertainment programs for the entire family. The World Stage, Global Stage, and Jo Ann Rose Gallery will feature an all-day series of performances representing many of the world’s cultures. Fans of dance will enjoy Spanish, Persian, Uzbek, Indian, Chinese, and Burmese dances, among others. Numerous musical performers will also appear, performing a variety of world music styles. The Traveling Players Ensemble returns to the Jo Ann Rose Gallery, along with a series of book readers and storytellers who will bring their different experiences to life.
In addition to performances, the Festival will feature an array of arts and crafts activities for the entire family. Participants can create their own Henna magnets, pinch pots, friendship bracelets, and more.
New at this year’s Festival is the first annual Multicultural Book Fair. The Fair will highlight books suggested by authors who have appeared at the CenterStage Reston Community Center, Reston educators, and award winning books written by authors with a variety of cultural perspectives.
As part of the Festival, Reston Community Center Lake Anne is featuring Art Mirrors Culture, the Reston Multicultural Festival Intergenerational Art Exhibit. The Exhibit, currently on display at the Jo Ann Rose Gallery and 3-D Gallery, runs through September 30. It features works from local artists who were asked how art mirrors culture in their work. On the day of the Festival, the 3-D Gallery will also feature sand paintings by Reston artist Marco Rando.
Attendees can enjoy culturally diverse foods at the Global Café or shop in the Global Market and take home a memento from artisans’ work from neighboring lands. With a vast array of performing arts, family activities, ethnic cuisine and global arts and crafts, there will be something for everyone to enjoy! A complete schedule of events follows below.
