RCC To Issue Full Refunds – Smaller Camp Schedule to be Offered
RESTON, VA – Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Reston Community Center will be canceling its originally planned summer camp schedule and issuing full refunds to registered patrons. However, RCC is organizing a new slate of camps to begin in July if state and local governments permit the reopening of RCC facilities. The new camp schedule will operate under the enhanced social distancing and public health guidelines issued by Fairfax County and the Commonwealth of Virginia for these kinds of experiences.
“We regret the inconvenience, but RCC has realized it could not go forward with its anticipated schedule of camps and respect Gov. Ralph Northam’s directives for limited COVID-19 exposure,” said RCC Board of Governors Chair Beverly Cosham. “For more than 40 years, RCC has provided safe, fun and cost-effective camp experiences for children. We intend to do that to the best of our ability in 2020, but it means starting from scratch in order to keep everyone safe and healthy.”
Families who have already registered and paid for camps online using myRCC will receive an automatic refund to the credit card they used to pay for the sessions. Payments made by credit card on walk-in or faxed registration forms will require RCC staff to call patrons to obtain the information; RCC doesn’t retain credit card data. Patrons who can’t be reached in that process will have their refunds issued by check from the Fairfax County Department of Finance. If the camp was paid for by check, they will receive a Fairfax County Department of Finance check by mail. Refund checks take between four and six weeks to process.
The new camp schedule will be released in June. Patrons will be encouraged to register online. In-person registration will be offered, but that process will be managed in a fashion to preserve social distancing. The date of registration opening for Reston patrons will be determined by the government reopening calendar. Because of social distancing guidelines, there will be a maximum of nine campers in each camp. All camps will take place at RCC Hunters Woods and RCC Lake Anne; there will be no Road Rulz or Camp Goodtimes on the Road camps this summer. RCC will also review camp fees and fee waiver programs in order to keep the offerings affordable for participants, and institute new protocols for camper and instructors to preserve optimum hygiene and social distancing.
“We know that families are challenged by the impact of COVID-19 and want options for their children to enjoy and learn this summer,” notes RCC Executive Director Leila Gordon. “We will be presenting a much different summer camp menu from our typical award-winning set of offerings, but we are determined to try to meet our community’s families where they are right now and present our typical high-quality content in the structure our public health challenge requires. We can’t wait to have children back at RCC.”
