My Heart Belongs to Halloween

By Toni Smith, RCC’s Youth & Teen Program Assistant

Halloween has always had my heart. It’s not just about costumes and candy but about joy, giving and connection. At Reston Community Center we love celebrating the magic of the season – and for me, it’s also a time to reflect on why it matters so much.

Since I was a kid, Halloween was special. My parents loved classic horror movies like “Friday the 13th,” “Nightmare on Elm Street” and “Halloween” and watching with them became a tradition. I fell for the spooky stories but also for autumn itself: the crisp air, orange leaves and the smell of pumpkins. Pure magic.

In 2014, I started volunteering at Shocktober in Leesburg, a haunted house that raises funds for Loudoun Arc. That’s when I found my talent for bringing Halloween to life while giving back. It changed me. The mix of spooky fun and community impact gave the season deeper meaning.

Halloween is also extra special to me for one little furry reason: my teacup Yorkie Heaven was born on October 31. She’s my forever Halloween baby and every year her birthday reminds me how much this holiday means to me.

I continue to volunteer, building friendships and raising funds through Halloween events. And because October has always been so close to my heart, I’m making it official – I’m getting married in October. To me it’s the perfect season: vibrant, warm and full of life.

This Halloween I hope you’ll join us at Reston Community Center to make memories, connect with others and celebrate everything spooky, crafty and fun.
