Steve Fidyk is a nationally acclaimed jazz drummer, composer, author and educator known for his musical versatility and depth. He is currently a member of the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra and serves on the Jazz Studies faculty at Temple University in Philadelphia. For over 21 years, Fidyk served as drummer and featured soloist with the Army Blues Big Band, one of the premier ensembles of The U.S. Army Band’s Pershing’s Own in Washington, D.C. During his tenure, he performed for seven U.S. Presidents and toured internationally. He continues to lead his own quintet, performing original compositions and arrangements and remains active on the national scene. He has worked extensively with saxophonist Walt Weiskopf and the late guitarist Jack Wilkins and was a longtime member of the Jazz Orchestra of Philadelphia, led by trumpeter Terell Stafford. A prolific recording artist, Fidyk appears on over 100 albums. His work as a leader includes “Heads Up!” (Posi-Tone, 2014), “Allied Forces” (Posi-Tone, 2016), “Battle Lines” (Blue Canteen Music, 2020) and “Red Beats” (Blue Canteen Music, 2023). He also co-led the Taylor/Fidyk Big Band (“A Perfect Match” and “Live at Blues Alley”) and recorded “Big Kids” with saxophonist John DeSalme. An in-demand clinician and author, Fidyk is an educational consultant for Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Essentially Ellington program and a regular contributor to Modern Drummer Magazine.
