Deborah “Debbie” Heron: It’s Been a Great Ride

My career at RCC has been a remarkable journey filled with memorable highlights and significant achievements. I started at RCC in 2002 as a Customer Service Representative, and this role paved the way for my growth within the organization. In 2004, I was promoted to the position of Assistant Youth Director, where I continued to excel and showcase my passion for creating meaningful experiences for the community. Just two years later, in 2006, my dedication and leadership qualities led to my appointment as the Youth Director, allowing me to make a profound impact on the lives of the young people in the community.

Throughout my time at RCC, my contributions and commitment have been recognized with various accolades, including receiving a Fairfax County Outstanding Performance Award and the prestigious Best Camps in Northern Virginia recognition for the past seven years and counting.

One of the most cherished memories of my career at RCC is my collaboration with Kim Gollop-Pagani, with whom I formed a deep and lasting friendship. Together, we implemented the Letters to Santa program, which quickly became a beloved tradition, bringing joy to many. I fondly recall the moments of excitedly sharing program and camp ideas with Kim, who responded with enthusiasm or playfulness, creating a lighthearted and enjoyable work environment.

My interactions with families and my ability to forge strong relationships with them have been a significant part of my journey. I take great pride in the rapport I have built and the trust that has been established over the years. My career has been marked by laughter, camaraderie, and the joy of creating unforgettable experiences for children and teens. I hope that my dedication and genuine passion for my work have left an indelible mark on the lives I have touched.

I was born and raised in Queens, New York, attended Bishop Reilly High School, and graduated from the City University of New York with a degree in Business and a minor in Psychology. I began my career as a legal secretary/administrative assistant at law firms in New York and Washington, D.C. In 1985, my husband Andrew, a middle school teacher, and I moved to Reston. We have two grown children: Liz, a Reston-based vet tech, and James, a concert violist, who lives in London. I’ve earned a Black Belt in and won the National Championship. In my free time, I enjoy reading, crocheting, woodworking, glass arts, pottery, travel, walking my dogs Laszlo (a Great Pyrenees) and Mishka (a Siberian Husky.) I enjoy volunteering to help and advocate for animals, and spending time with family.

I express my heartfelt gratitude to the entire RCC family and convey my deep appreciation for the unwavering support, camaraderie, and the opportunity to make a meaningful difference that I have enjoyed. As I embark on new adventures, I carry with me cherished memories and invaluable lessons learned during my time here. I extend my best wishes for the continued success of this great community institution, and I have confidence that the spirit of positivity here will continue to thrive. DH
