Diva Central 2025: Style, Community and Sustainability

By Husna Basiri, Equity Partnerships Assistant

RCC is ready to host the 23rd annual Diva Central, a cornerstone of our community. This isn’t just about finding a stunning dress; it embodies a culture of giving, sustainability and celebration. Middle and high school students in the area will have the exciting opportunity to shop an impressive collection of dresses, shoes and accessories – ensuring they are fully outfitted for their spring formal and prom nights, completely free of charge, thanks to the unwavering generosity of our community.

Breaking Down Barriers to Special Moments

Formal events like prom can be both thrilling and daunting, particularly given the financial burden associated with them. According to Fortune.com contributor Jay L. Zagorsky, the costs for prom have surged, with some teens reportedly spending over $2,000 on the night. Diva Central takes action to eliminate this financial strain, allowing students to concentrate on creating lasting memories rather than worrying about expenses.

Each February, RCC calls for donations and the response is nothing short of extraordinary. Hundreds of gently used and new items flood in, providing students with an extensive array of sizes, colors and styles. This initiative is not merely about clothing; it is about empowering every young person to feel seen, valued and supported.

Gen Z’s Commitment to Sustainability

Diva Central thrives because it resonates with the values of Gen Z shoppers who prioritize sustainable and socially responsible choices. By promoting the relove of formalwear, this event champions the essential “reduce, reuse, recycle” ethos while significantly mitigating the environmental impact of producing new clothing. Reusing dresses conserves vital resources such as water and energy while preventing waste from entering landfills, creating a tangible positive impact on our planet. It’s a straightforward equation: students leave feeling confident and fabulous while contributing to a sustainable future.

A Personal Touch: LaTanja Snelling’s Vision

For over eight years, Snelling has been the driving force behind RCC’s community initiatives. Inspired by her mother’s career in parks and recreation, she is passionate about crafting meaningful experiences that unite people. Her leadership is integral in ensuring events like Diva Central continue to have a profound and lasting impact on Reston’s youth.

I take immense pride in coordinating the annual Diva Central events. It is a powerful opportunity to connect with the youth in our community and provide them with access to unique styles they might not find anywhere else,” asserts LaTanja R. Snelling, CPRP, RCC’s Equity Partnerships Director.

It Takes a Village

Diva Central stands as a testament to the strength of the community. Every dress donated, every accessory given and all the volunteer hours dedicated to this event exemplify the incredible spirit of our community. In previous years, local organizations and businesses have united with RCC to guarantee students have access to a wide range of styles and sizes, showcasing the collective effort that drives Diva Central’s success. Whether you’re a student in search of the perfect prom outfit, a family member stepping up to help or a donor contributing to the cause, you are part of something significant.

Diva Central is a celebration of style, connection and responsibility. Don’t miss the chance to be part of this impactful tradition; donate a dress, volunteer your time or spread the word to ensure even more students benefit from this opportunity!

Help us make 2025 another unforgettable year for this beloved tradition.
