Diva Central’s 22nd Annual Formal and Prom Dress Giveaway Event Helps a Diva Say Yes to the Dress

Diva Central’s 22nd Annual Formal and Prom Dress Giveaway Event
Helps a Diva Say Yes to the Dress

RESTON, VA — On Saturday, March 16, Reston Community Center hosts the 22nd Annual Diva Central Formal and Prom Dress Giveaway at RCC Lake Anne. In what has become a cherished tradition, this unique shopping event offers Reston’s middle and high school students the opportunity to explore an extensive collection of stylish clothing that includes dresses, shoes, and accessories, from which they can select an outfit for their spring formal dance or prom.

The goal of this annual dress giveaway is to make prom attendance more accessible and inclusive for students and ease the burden that these costs can put on families. The combined cost of hair styling, makeup, gowns, tickets, and rides puts attending the prom out of reach for many families. According to a 2023 Fortune.com article, teenagers spend an average of $1000 and up on their prom/spring formal event.

“When we started this program more than two decades ago, RCC was the only local organization offering such an event,” said RCC Board Chair Beverly Cosham. “Since then, we’ve been joined by several other similar offerings for young people. We are delighted it has proven to be such a success.”

Throughout the month of February, hundreds of beautiful dresses, shoes, bags and other accessories are donated by members of the community. These items are added to a large collection of clothing, with an inclusive range of sizes and styles. To help market the event, mannequins styled in donated dresses and accessories are strategically placed in area schools, Reston Opportunity Neighborhood (RestON) communities and RCC facilities. These mini fashion hubs serve as a visual representation of the community’s collaboration and support.

Embracing sustainability, the Diva Central Dress Giveaway underscores our collective responsibility to promote the reuse and repurposing of clothing, fostering a more eco-conscious approach to fashion that resonates with our shared values and commitment to environmental stewardship.

This one-day event is the perfect shopping experience for any middle or high school student who needs a dress, shoes, jewelry and other accessories. Everything is FREE, and shoppers may choose up to two outfits. Volunteers will be on hand to help teens complete their outfit selections, share makeup tips, hand out swag bags and door prizes.

Patrons are asked to register in advance online through myRCC. For additional information, please contact LaTanja Snelling, RCC Equity Partnerships Director, at 703-390-6158.
