Green Reston: “Make a Better Place for You and for Me”

By LaTanja Snelling, CPRP, RCC’s Equity Partnerships Director

I must admit that I’m not fully “environmentally conscious,” but I am aware of actions in society that can negatively impact our planet. I believe that by educating ourselves and taking small steps to “make a better place for you and me,” as Michael Jackson sang in his 1991 hit song “Heal the World,” these little actions can lead to significant changes.

One small step that became a major leap for my family in our effort to “heal the world” is making our own cleaning supplies at home. Before I became a mom, I enjoyed experimenting with different items to create cleaning products that were cost-effective, efficient and safe. As a child, I couldn’t tolerate the strong scents of commercial cleaning products; they burned my eyes and irritated my airways, so my mom would only use them when I was away from home for extended periods.

Once I reached adulthood and began making my own purchasing decisions, I opted for cleaning products that were either lightly scented or entirely unscented. In 2015, I came across “Clean My Space” on YouTube, hosted by Melissa Maker, who provided cleaning tips and instructions for making cleaning products using items you most likely already have at home. Since then, I’ve been dedicated to making my cleaning supplies. Not only is it healthier for me, but it’s also better for the planet. I enjoy using more natural cleaning methods with everyday household items like white vinegar, distilled water, rubbing alcohol, baking soda and essential oils.

My passion for creating my own cleaning products inspired me to launch a fun, eco-friendly family event to celebrate Earth Day – Green Reston in 2021. Fairfax County government agencies and local organizations are invited to attend and share information on various resources, programs and services that people can use to “make a better place for you and me.” I love this event because it is a great opportunity to learn so much from the exhibitors and we have a great time with families enjoying many activities.

This year, our fourth annual Green Reston event takes place on Saturday, April 12 at Hunters Woods Plaza from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. RCC will be joined by the Fairfax County Health Department, the Fairfax County Park Authority’s Wonder Wagon, the Reston Regional Library, Sustainability Matters, Plant Nova Native and several other local organizations.

In conjunction with Green Reston, we will be hosting the annual Green Reston Scavenger Hunt, which encourages the exploration of Reston’s beautiful outdoor areas in a “hunt” for nature’s treasures. Participants can send us pictures of their finds based on prompts from on the scavenger hunt clue cards.

If you can’t make it to the event, you’re still welcome to participate in the Green Reston Scavenger Hunt through April 15 by submitting your photos for a chance to win a prize!
