A Guide to RCC’s Swimming Lessons

Reston Community Center’s Learn-to-Swim program features small class sizes, beautiful facilities, dedicated and well-trained instructors and is an excellent value. See what parents and students say about their aquatics experience at RCC:

“Instructors were great! Always friendly and helpful and clearly enjoyed working with the children.”
– Water Introduction parent, Winter/Spring 2025
“Mr. Alfred is a great teacher! He is patient, keeps the kids focused and on track, encourages them to push themselves but is supportive when they feel nervous, and keeps class interesting.”
– Rookie II parent, Winter/Spring 2025
“My son says that [the] RCC pool is the cleanest pool he has ever been in. That is a huge compliment from an eight-year-old with extremely high standards! Big kudos to everyone at RCC for keeping a clean, safe and fun place to be healthy. Thank you for all you do for the Reston community.”
– Level 4 parent, Winter/Spring 2025
“Our 5-year-old absolutely loves her swim lessons with Coach Anna, and she is learning so much. We are so happy to have found these lessons. I tell all the other parents I meet what a fantastic option private swim lessons at RCC are!”
– Private Lesson parent, Winter/Spring 2025

Reviewed the Program Guide but still not sure which level is right for your child? Contact the Aquatics Service Desk at 703-390-6150 for advice or to schedule a one-on-one skills assessment.

Before registration begins, visit myRCC, RCC’s registration portal, to make sure your household information is current. If you’re new to RCC, you will be able to create a free account at that time.

If you already have an RCC account, make sure that any children you want to register are set up in myRCC.

Please allow at least 48 hours to create an account or add new family members. Remember that an RCC Customer Service Representative can assist you if you have any questions.

With an active and current myRCC account, you are ready to register!

Plan B: The Class Is Full, Now What Do I Do?

If the class(es) you would like to enroll in are full, there are still many other opportunities to make a splash at RCC.

  • Join the Waiting List

It IS worth getting on the waiting list!

The Aquatics team works hard to address waiting lists, sometimes adding extra classes to meet demand when instructors and space become available. This is especially true for the classes with the highest demand: Water Introduction and Aqua Tots (parent-and-me classes) and Skipper classes (for three year olds). For other programs, there may be cancelations or level changes in mid-season that open up new spaces. If you’re on the waiting list, the Aquatics Team will contact you when space becomes available.

  • Consider Weeknight Classes

Since demand is greatest for weekend morning sessions, other sessions on weeknights do not fill up as quickly.  Also, weeknight classes are more cost-effective.

  • Open Swim

The Warm Water Pool and Lap Pool have open swimming hours nearly every day of the year. There, you can practice skills and have some fun on your own while you are waiting for your preferred class to open up. See the schedule and fees for Open Swim here.

  • Schedule Private Lessons

For a curriculum specifically tailored to your swimmer’s needs, consider private lessons. A 30-minute class is $40 for Reston residents and employees and $60 for Non-Reston. Contact the Aquatics Program Director for more information at 703-390-6152.

RCC Swimming is for Everyone

At Reston Community Center, the principles of equity and opportunity are at the heart of our vision to “enrich lives and build community for all of Reston,” and this extends to the pool, with several programs designed to make the pool a welcoming and inclusive place.

  • Adapted Aquatics

Adapted Aquatics classes are individually customized for children and adults with physical or learning disabilities. RCC staff and volunteers work together ensuring that each participant receives the personal attention needed to successfully participate in the class.

  • Free Beginner Swim Lessons

Each summer, RCC offers free beginner (Rookie I and Level 1) swim lessons for children. With so many pools and lakes around Reston, free swimming lessons ensure that water safety is accessible for everyone.

  • Fee Waiver Program

RCC offers a Fee Waiver Program for Reston employees and residents which  provides financial assistance to all members and dependents of eligible households. In response to the recent changes in the federal workforce, RCC has expanded the eligibility for its Fee Waiver Program to support federal employees who have been affected. With a fee waiver, families can choose from a variety of options, including summer camps and, of course, swimming lessons.

  • Ask About Accommodations

To request reasonable ADA accommodation, call 703-476-4500, TTY 711.

So, it’s time to mark your calendar, update your myRCC account and get swimming. See you at the pool!
