Reston Community Center is deeply saddened to share the news of the passing of Catherine M. “Cathy” Hudgins, a pioneering leader, trailblazer and tireless advocate for equity, inclusion and community.
Cathy made an extraordinary impact on Reston, Fairfax County and beyond. As the first African American to serve on the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors representing the Hunter Mill District from 2000 to 2019, she championed affordable housing, human services and diversity, always working to ensure that every resident had access to opportunity and support.
Cathy’s connection to Reston ran deep. She and her husband Willie L. Hudgins Jr. were among the first residents of our planned community when they arrived in 1969. Before entering public service, Cathy worked at AT&T as a programmer, consultant and analyst. She went on to hold key political roles at both the local and state level, receiving numerous awards for her leadership and housing advocacy
One of her most lasting legacies is right here in Reston: the Southgate Community Center which she envisioned and brought to life in 2006. In 2021 the center was renamed the Cathy Hudgins Community Center at Southgate in honor of her leadership and unwavering commitment to community building.
We at RCC honor Cathy’s life, her many contributions and her deep love for this community. Her work opened doors, lifted up voices and created spaces where everyone belongs, a legacy that will inspire and benefit generations to come.
