Freelance Theatre Technician

Job Description

Pay rate: $15.00 – 28.00/hour, depending on experience, education, and certifications.
Hours: Occasional. Requires the ability to work evenings, weekends and holidays. Hours vary according to programming season and schedule. This position will not exceed 900 hours per calendar year.

Position Description
Reston Community Center hires Technicians as exempt, part-time employees to provide professional technical services in a manner consistent with theatrical industry standards to include, but not limited to, crew operations in rigging, lighting, and sound. Theatre Technicians will be scheduled on an on-call basis, depending on Arts & Events and agency requirements. The scheduled hours will include daytime, evening, and weekend shifts. Hourly rates of pay are determined according to experience and training in the field. Technicians are under the direct supervision of the RCC Technical Director and Assistant Technical Director(s). Technicians provide technical support for Reston Community Center events and functions as assigned. 

This listing covers a wide range of needs. We do not expect anyone to have all these skills. We are interested in hiring crew members with a variety of skill sets. 

Typical Tasks

  • Serve as load in, strike and stage crew for in-house and offsite event locations. 
  • Wardrobe, dresser, and costuming support. 
  • Performer hospitality and greenroom setup and monitoring 
  • Occasional painting and scenic artist work 
  • Event stage management 
  • Basic Carpentry 
  • Hanging and focusing lights 
  • Manual and motorized rigging operations 
  • MEWP/Genie operation (certification preferred, training available) 
  • Operating ETC IonXE20 console 
  • Sound system setup and operation using Yamaha QL5, TF1, and Rio boxes over Dante 
  • Qlab operation for audio and video playback 


Qualifications

  • Experience in theater and live event production. 
  • Advanced lighting, sound, rigging, stage management and/or wardrobe skills preferred. 
  • Must have reliable transportation to get to Reston Community Center and offsite locations in Reston. 
  • Ability to work independently managing offsite events. 


After notification of hire, the following will be required

  • A valid Social Security card
  • Criminal history record check, including fingerprinting. Results must be received prior to hire date.
