Young Actors Theatre Costume Designer/Director

Job Description

Pay rate: $30 per hour
Hours: 175 – 200 hour contract
Dates: July 6 – August 7, 2026

Location: Reston Community Center, Hunters Woods

Position Description
The Young Actors Theatre (YAT) program is a five-week program, July 6 – August 7, 2026, that trains young actors in the disciplines of voice, dance and acting with a focus of exposing participants to the process of theatrical productions. There will be a maximum of 75 participants that are split into three groups. The 7-11 age group is limited to 50 participants who will be divided into two groups. The 12-15 age group is limited to 25 participants.  Each group will perform a final performance on one of the following dates August 5, 6, and 7, 2026.

Program and Administrative Responsibilities 

  • Leads a team of 2-3 costume assistants in pulling, building, and/or buying costumes for three productions. Typical hours from 9:00 a.m. – 3: 00 p.m.
  • Communicates with directors/creative team to meet the costuming needs of production
  • Ensures the costumes teams remains on budget
  • Ensures a safe environment
  • Provides mentorship to costume assistants
  • Ensures maintenance and organization of existing costume stock
  • Contributes to an organized and positive rehearsal environment

Minimum Employment Standards 

  • Any combination of education and/or experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited university
  • Must be available for the full term of the contract

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Knowledge and applied experience in designing and building costumes for the performing arts
  • Experience leading teams and mentoring
  • Ability to sew
  • Experience working with youth
  • Must be cooperative, dedicated, reliable and patient

Licenses and Certifications Required

  • Must be First-Aid and CPR certified at the beginning of the program
