RCC’s Green Reston Honors Earth Day with Family-friendly Activities

RCC’S GREEN RESTON HONORS EARTH DAY

WITH FAMILY-FRIENDLY ACTIVITIES (PDF)

RESTON, VA — RCC honors Earth Day with a new program, Green Reston. Green Reston will include free activities on the plaza at RCC Hunters Woods on Saturday, April 24, as well as a scavenger hunt that families can complete on their own from April 2 to 24. Although officially Earth Day is celebrated on Thursday, April 22, the weeks leading up to Saturday, April 24 will give families opportunities to hunt for images of what makes Reston environmentally vibrant.

The free April 24 event will take place from 10:00 a.m. to noon. Registration and mask-wearing are required. Fun and eco-friendly activities include:

Make Your Own Playdough – be sure to bring your own container for taking your playdough home.

Start Your Own Herb Garden – we will give you all the supplies to create an herb garden in a biodegradable seed pot and instructions for maintaining it at home.

An interactive earth-friendly activity and demonstration with Girl Scouts Nation’s Capital.

Storytelling – at 10:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m., we will be reading an earth-friendly book that is fun for all ages. Storytelling will be followed by an accompanying craft.

Families can also take part in the Green Reston photographic scavenger hunt on their own from April 2 – 24. Explore nature and take pictures along the way. Use the hashtag #GreenReston in social media platforms (make sure your account is set to public viewing). Not on social media?  Email pictures to Latanja.Snelling@fairfaxcounty.gov. The family with the best picture will win a prize. Stop by the Customer Service Desk at RCC locations or click this link for a list of nature-themed items to find in your neighborhood.

To register for the event on April 24, visit myRCC and pick one of two timeslots, 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. (8C8050-1B) or 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. (8C8050-1C).
