RCC’S “UNFORGETTABLE” ART PROGRAM RECEIVES AWARD

RCC’S “UNFORGETTABLE” ART PROGRAM RECEIVES AWARD
Innovative art program expands access for individuals living with Alzheimer’s

RESTON, VA – Reston Community Center (RCC) is proud to announce that its Unforgettable program has been honored with the Virginia Recreation and Park Society (VRPS) Award for Best New DEI Initiative in the 50,000 –100,000 population category. Presented at the 72nd Annual VRPS Conference in Roanoke, this award recognizes unique and innovative programs that advance inclusion and accessibility in parks and recreation across Virginia, in consideration of the general excellence of the initiative and efficient use of resources.

Unforgettable addresses a significant gap in equitable access to the arts for individuals living with Alzheimer’s and other dementias. In collaboration with local memory care organizations – The Kensington Reston, Hunters Woods at Trails Edge and Tall Oaks Assisted Living – Unforgettable demonstrates how intentionally designed art experiences can engage people of all abilities.

“We are honored to receive this recognition from VRPS,” stated Bill Bouie, Chair, RCC Board of Governors. “Unforgettable reflects our commitment to making the arts accessible to every member of our community. In opening our doors to neighbors living with Alzheimer’s and dementia, we affirm that creativity, dignity and connection belong to us all. Through RCC’s continued efforts to bring high-quality programs off-site and directly into our most underserved neighborhoods, we ensure that the power of the arts reaches those who need it most.”

Launched in 2024, Unforgettable offers monthly art-based sessions featuring a guided gallery tour and a hands-on creative activity led by art professionals and dementia care certified staff. In its inaugural year, Unforgettable exceeded expectations with 37 sessions and more than 500 individual touchpoints, encouraging a warm, supportive environment sparking joy and connection. Caregivers consistently highlight the program’s impact. “I am so thankful to be part of this rewarding program,” said Diane Eades, Memory Care Director at Hunters Woods at Trails Edge. “Some residents struggle to connect in other settings, but they thrive at RCC. It’s the highlight of our month.”

Unforgettable has now expanded to include public weekend sessions, broadening access for families seeking inclusive arts experiences. These sessions are suitable for individuals with levels 2 to 5 cognitive impairment and require caregiver participation. The program is free; however, registration is required. The recognition of Unforgettable reflects RCC’s leadership in advancing accessibility, engagement and inclusion through the arts. RCC remains committed to creating welcoming spaces where all community members can engage, create and thrive.
