RESTON COMMUNITY CENTER LAUNCHES YOUTUBE VIDEOS
IN HONOR OF 40th ANNIVERSARY (PDF)
RESTON, VA – Reston Community Center is excited to release a series of YouTube videos detailing RCC’s journey since its founding in 1979, its place in the community, Reston’s growing population and changing needs, and the agency’s commitment to arts and recreation.
The six videos will be posted on RCC’s YouTube channel biweekly beginning October 21. The premiere video goes behind the scenes with the Reston Community Players. The Players have been performing at the CenterStage at RCC Hunters Woods since RCC’s opening in 1979. RCP opened its 2019-2020 season with A Gentlemen’s Guide to Love and Murder on October 18.
The short videos were produced and directed by Peabody Award-winning filmmaker and Reston resident Rebekah Wingert, principal of Storycatcher Productions. Wingert was also the producer and director of Another Way of Living: The Story of Reston, VA (2015). She was awarded a Peabody for her film My Neighbourhood (2012).
“People today want to learn more about their community and its stories in interesting and easily accessible formats. By using our YouTube platform, we will share how RCC connects to our partners and patrons in these compelling videos,” said RCC Executive Director Leila Gordon. “We hope people will enjoy learning more about getting involved and enjoying each other’s company through RCC programs and services.”
These first films present six snapshots ranging from RCC’s history to the experiences of people participating in programs or spending time at RCC facilities. In addition to the Reston Community Players’ video, look for upcoming pieces on:
November 4: Meet Gloria and Cesar, who moved from Peru to Reston more than 20 years ago. The film highlights RCC’s big role in their lives as they assimilated to American culture.
November 18: Learn about Reston Opportunity Neighborhood (RestON). RCC has been key in outreach to neighbors served by this County program that is facilitated by Cornerstones. We visit offsite programming to show how RCC, through classes and events, is helping families embrace activities that enrich their skills and their lives.
December 2: Go behind the scenes at RCC Hunters Woods on a typical busy Saturday. From patrons gathering for Community Coffee to hardworking staff in pre-production of a show in the CenterStage, RCC is a center of activity for all ages and interests.
December 16: RCC is a “center without walls,” producing dozens of offsite events around Reston annually. From concerts at Reston Town Square Park to hands-on children’s events at Reston Station, RCC produces free experiences for all to enjoy, all over Reston.
December 30: With a nearly year-long renovation of RCC’s Terry L. Smith Aquatics Center complete, meet Jim Allred, whose vision and commitment led to the founding of RCC, as he tours the facility under construction and remembers RCC’s beginnings.
