Reston Community Center Undergoing Major Capital Projects at Hunters Woods Facility

Reston Community Center Undergoing Major Capital Projects at Hunters Woods Facility
Reduced Programming and Services July 22 through September 6; Aquatics Venue Closed

RESTON, VA — Reston Community Center Hunters Woods (RCC HW) will be undertaking two major capital projects this summer. The nearly 50-year-old building will be getting a new elevator. Additionally, a comprehensive effort to replace building hot water and energy-related systems and components will occur that will result in energy utilization improvements and cost savings. Project components include a solar module system to be installed on the roof, comprehensive LED lighting upgrades, hot water plant boilers and pumps replacement, and modification and upgrades to the controls system. These measures will offset 260 metric tons of carbon dioxide generated by the current equipment and systems.

Programs scheduled at RCC HW will take place, albeit with occasional interruptions possible due to the two projects. Staff have limited rentals during this period to avoid booking events or uses for which such interruptions would be difficult to tolerate. Camps will be taking place until the summer programming ends. Because of the systems involved, the Terry L. Smith Aquatics Center will be closed during this period. The typical pool maintenance done during the end of August and beginning of September will also occur.

Work on the elevator will be done overnight during the first couple of weeks to avoid demolition activity noise and disruption. While this added to the project cost, the ability to provide the limited programming and services planned during these weeks was vital to RCC and the patrons served. All contractors involved in these projects will be adhering to workplace practices designed to preserve the highest level of safety. Workers undergo extensive training in workplace safety. Fairfax County government contractors assure background checks and similar screening occurs before starting projects.

Parents and patrons can have confidence that all the areas of RCC HW impacted by this work will be barricaded and safeguarded to protect patrons using the building. A one-month extension will be provided to annual pass holders whose passes expire in August or later, and for monthly pass holders whose passes expire in August. No monthly or annual passes will be issued during July and August 2024. Anyone having questions about the projects can reach out to RCC via RCCContact@fairfaxcounty.gov.
