SINGER-SONGWRITER CRYS MATTHEWS
TO PERFORM AT RCC AS PART OF MLK BIRTHDAY WEEKEND
RESTON, VA – Reston Community Center is excited to add singer-songwriter Crys Matthews to its lineup of artists and activities for the Reston Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebration January 19-21, 2019.
Matthews, a Herndon resident, has gained national acclaim for her music. Her stylings blend Americana, folk, jazz, blues, bluegrass and funk into a bold, complex performance steeped in traditional melodies and punctuated by honest, original lyrics.
Matthews, who has been compared to musician Tracy Chapman, has found inspiration in her surroundings here in Virginia, from driving through the Blue Ridge Mountains to the compelling and heartbreaking love story of Richard and Mildred Loving. In 2017, she was the grand-prize winner in the NewSong Music Competition. She also won the People’s Music Network’s Social Justice Songs contest at the 2017 Northeast Regional Folk Alliance
“Crys Matthews is an important voice of her generation and will be an excellent addition to our weekend lineup,” said Paul Douglas Michnewicz, RCC’s Arts & Events Director. “Her perspective reminds us that our similarities are far more important than our differences.”
Matthews will also be an artist-in-residence in Reston, where she will conduct a workshop for students at Langston Hughes Middle School and South Lakes High School.
Matthews will perform January 20 at 2:00 p.m. at RCC’s CenterStage. Tickets are $15 Reston, $20 Non-Reston. Tickets are available online or at RCC’s box office, (703) 476-4500, Press ‘3’ or TTY 711.
Mark your calendar for a full slate of events to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., including a keynote speech by civil rights activist DeRay Mckesson on Monday, January 21 at RCC Hunters Woods.
