Staff Spotlight: How Jean Chow Found a Home at RCC

When Jean Chow moved to Reston, RCC quickly became one of her favorite places. Friendly, curious and deeply engaged in the community, she raised her children while making the most of everything RCC has to offer. In fall 2023, she took the next step and joined the staff.

Since then, Jean has become an essential part of the RCC team, supporting Customer Service, Leisure & Learning, Aquatics and special events such as the Reston Multicultural Festival and the Diva Central Shopping Event. If you have attended an RCC program recently, chances are Jean was there to welcome you, often with a cheerful insight about a recent class, performance or trip.

We caught up with Jean for a quick Q&A to get to know the person behind that warm welcome.

What brought you to Reston Community Center?

I first visited Reston Community Center when I moved to Reston over two decades ago. As my family grew, I found myself increasingly drawn to the center and now I work here!

What is the most rewarding aspect of interacting with RCC patrons?

My favorite part is being at the front desk and meeting the diverse, interesting and unique people who make up this multigenerational and international community. I love interacting with Reston patrons, welcoming new neighbors and connecting them with engaging programs. I also enjoy getting to know the budding artist community at Lake Anne and helping neighbors discover resources they may not know are available.

Another joy of being here is seeing how our community shares the many ways different cultures celebrate holidays and life milestones. For example, our Lunar New Year celebration this year was a great success and the photo booth was a huge hit.

What are some of your favorite RCC programs?

One of my favorite excursions this year was the Philadelphia Flower Show. I also love the weekly Line Dancing class, which is such a fun way to exercise. Many patrons are surprised by how many high-quality programs we offer that are both enjoyable and enriching.

Is there a patron success story or transformation that has really stuck with you?

It is incredibly gratifying to watch our young patrons learn to swim in our pool and take part in our summer camps. I love seeing them grow from childhood to adulthood. Some of those same kids are now RCC lifeguards and my coworkers. They are RCC’s future and I am so proud of them.
