RCC CELEBRATES WATER SAFETY MONTH

RCC CELEBRATES NATIONAL WATER SAFETY MONTH (PDF)

water safety at RCCRESTON, VA – Reston Community Center will celebrate National Water Safety Month in May with a month-long campaign to increase water safety awareness in the Reston community. RCC joins thousands of organizations across the country in this national effort to help prevent drowning and water-related illness and injuries.

As a measure of RCC’s commitment to water safety, free beginning swimming classes are offered to Reston residents and children of Reston employees every summer. Level 1-2 Learn-to-Swim classes for children ages 6-12 are free for Reston patrons during July and August. Summer registration opens Monday, May 1 at 9:00 a.m. for Reston patrons; early registration is encouraged as classes fill quickly.

RCC also works with Reston Association to offer a Drowning Education Awareness Program (DEAP) throughout the year. DEAP offers two land-based water safety awareness programs for youth and civic organizations; classes are free for Reston residents and employees.

In addition to water safety programs, RCC will observe National Water Safety Month with free coloring/activity booklets, a water safety pledge and a public campaign promoting water safety.

“Reston has always had a proud tradition of swimming and many pool choices,” said Matt McCall, RCC’s Aquatics Director. “But part of our mission here at RCC is to get everyone safe near all water, including Reston’s lakes.”

To continue that mission, RCC’s Aquatics Department has been offering free CPR classes in Reston neighborhoods. Nearly two dozen residents recently took part in a workshop at Cedar Ridge Community Center.

For more information on Water Safety Month activities, please stop by the Aquatics Service Desk at RCC Hunters Woods, or call 703-390-6150.
