RESTON, VA— RCC is pleased to partner with the Reston Museum, Public Art Reston, Volunteer Reston and Lake Anne Plaza to present the annual Founder’s Day event commemorating the birthday of Reston founder Robert E. Simon Jr. Saturday, April 6, 2024, will be the 20th anniversary of the beloved community tradition that began the year Simon turned 90.
Also marking a key anniversary is “Another Way of Living: The Story of Reston, VA.,” a documentary directed by Reston’s own award-winning director, Rebekah Wingert that was completed to coincide with Reston’s 50th and Bob Simon’s 100th birthdays. The film chronicles Simon’s quest to create a new kind of suburban American community that would enable people to live, work and play all within short distances from where they lived. Bob Simon enshrined seven key principles in his plan that emphasized the centrality of human dignity, natural and man-made beauty and other high quality-of-life attributes and values.
In recognition of the 10th anniversary of the documentary, Wingert will present a short film comprised of outtakes and never-before-seen footage at RCC Lake Anne during the Founder’s Day celebrations. The movie can be viewed on RCC’s YouTube channel beginning the evening of April 6.
“We are thrilled to bring this acclaimed movie to the community,” said RCC Board of Governors Chair Beverly Cosham. “It will introduce newcomers to our history and refresh the memories of those who have lived here for years. We are very grateful to Rebekah Wingert both for her original work on the documentary and for her generous gift of it to the RCC YouTube platform.”
This year’s celebrations will spotlight books and their authors and will feature a broad variety of literature in addition to an exciting lineup of entertainment and local culinary treats. The programming kicks off at 12:00 p.m. at Lake Anne Plaza and runs until 4:00 p.m. Reston Association is providing a volunteer opportunity for the community to fan out and clean up the area starting at 11:00 a.m..
