RCC Celebrates National Water Safety Month

RCC Celebrates National Water Safety Month (PDF)

RESTON, VA – Reston Community Center will celebrate National Water Safety Month with a month-long campaign in May to increase water safety awareness in the Reston community. RCC joins thousands of organizations across the country in this national effort to help children, parents and caregivers understand the risks associated with being around the water.

As a measure of our commitment to water safety, RCC offers free beginning swim classes to Reston youth ages 6 to 12 (Reston residents and children of Reston employees) every summer; the free Level 1-2 Learn-to-Swim classes are offered to Reston patrons in July and August. Summer registration opens Monday, May 1 at 9:00 a.m. for Reston patrons; early registration is encouraged as classes fill quickly. In addition to offering CPR and First Aid training opportunities to the community, RCC also works with Reston Association to offer a Drowning Education Awareness Program (DEAP) throughout the year. DEAP offers two land-based water safety awareness programs for youth and civic organizations; presentations are free for Reston residents and employees.

RCC will also observe National Water Safety Month with free coloring/activity booklets, a water safety pledge and a public campaign promoting water safety. Materials will be available at the Terry L. Smith Aquatics Center at RCC Hunters Woods. Other special experiences and programming will be announced throughout the month; check our website for complete information.

“The RCC DEAP initiative started in 2010. RCC is proud to support drowning awareness and education programs that also include certification options for Lifeguards, Swimming Instructors and Aquatic Facility Operators. These certifications are offered to Reston residents (and employees) at very low fees,” says Joe Leary, Aquatics Director.
